Senior Seminar Introduction

Senior Seminar Syllabus Introduced
Seniors will take a Student Survey and participate in icebreaker activities.

Senior Seminar Pre-Test

Students are assessed on their prior knowledge of workplace skills.
Students will learn about Letters of Reference

Workplace Vocabulary

Students will complete activities as they learn definitions of vocabulary words used in the workplace

Workplace Vocabulary Continued

Students will take a survey about their plans for after graduation for Guidance.
Students learn definitions of vocabulary words used in the workplace.

Employment Applications: Part I

Students will learn basic rules for completing a Pen/Paper or Online Employment Application.

Employment Applications: Part II

Students will fill out an "Employment Fact Sheet" to use when filling out out applications in the future.

Career Objective Essay Prewrite

Students will do pre-writing activities for their Career Objective Essay.
Students will complete the pre-writing exercise in class.

Career Objective Essay Rough Draft

Students will use their pre-writing exercise to type their rough draft of their Career Objective Essay.
Students will wrap up completing their Application Fact Sheet.

COE Edit/Finding Employment

Students will make corrections on their edited COE and select stationary for publishing.
Students will select a picture for the cover of their portfolio.
Students will learn the steps in the process of finding employment.

Recognizing Marketable Skills

Students will differentiate between hard and soft skills and begin categorizing their own skills for their resumes.
Students will recognize their activities and community service to be included on their resumes.

Resumes: Parts and Rules

Students will learn the different parts of a resume and the purpose of each.
Students will complete an activity to review basic resume writing rules.

Resumes: Type Rough Draft

Students will use their completed Employment Fact Sheet and the template provided in class to type their rough draft of their resume.

Resume: Final Edit/Keeping a Job

Students will make corrections on their edited resumes and save to be printed.
Students will watch a video and complete an activity on ways to not get fired.
HOMEWORK: Send an email to Ms. Slattery.

Paying Your Dues

Students will individually read about the topic of "Paying Your Dues".
Students will individually complete a reflection activity prior to participating in a group discussion.

Employment Correspondence

Students will learn about writing Cover Letters and complete in-class notes.
Students will learn about writing Thank You Letters and complete in-class notes.

Communication Skills in the Workplace

Students learn about communication skills, non-verbal behavior, (body language) and active listening.
Students will participate in various activities that highlight the importance of communicaiton skills.

Personal Finance: Getting Paid

Students will complete in-class notes on:
- Ways to get paid for working
- How to read a paystub or pay statement
- Paying taxes, W-4 forms and W-2 forms.

Personal Finance: Renting an Apartment

Students will learn how to rent an apartment
Students will learnterminology used in rental listings.
Students will use internet sources to view apartment listings.

Personal Finance: Creating a Budget

Students will use internet resources to create a household budget.

Personal Finance: Banks and Credit Cards

Students will learn the basics of having a checking or savings account.
Students will learn the basics of having a credit card.

Senior Recognition Night Review

Students will review the information regarding Senior Recognition Night, dress codes, and procedures.

Time Management Skills

Students will learn time management skills through various activities and filling out a planner.

Job Interviews: First Impressions

Students will learn how to prepare for a job interview and the importance of making a good first impression.

Job Interviews: More Than Questions

Students will learn strategies and tips for doing well on job interviews.

Job Interviews: Tell Me About Yourself

Students will learn about the most commonly asked interview questions and be given strategies for answering them.

Senior Seminar Wrap-Up

Students will review their portfolios and take them home.
Students will complete a survey about Senior Seminar.
